TMJ Treatment from Our Oakland NUCCA Chiropractor

If you’re among the many Americans who struggle with TMJ, you may find such mundane everyday tasks as chewing, laughing, and talking an agonizing experience. Although dentists can resolve some cases of TMJ, your symptoms may have their origins in your musculoskeletal alignment instead of your bite. If so, you can obtain the relief you seek from our Oakland NUCCA chiropractor at Equilibrium Spinal Care.

TMJ Causes and Symptoms

TMJ, also known as TMD, refers to a dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint at each end of the jawbone. This joint has amazing mobility, permitting your jaw to move in the many subtle ways that make eating and talking possible. Unfortunately, this complex structure can easily fall prey to painful problems. If you suffer from TMJ, you may not be able to open your mouth very wide, or you may find it painful to move your jaw in any direction. Opening or closing your mouth may even produce a popping or clicking sound. In addition to jaw pain, you may experience headaches and/or discomfort in your neck, shoulders, or face.

TMJ can stem from degeneration within the jaw joints, a blow to the face that dislodged the joints from their natural alignment, or a bite misalignment that causes unnatural muscular stress in the jaw. However, the pain you feel can also be referred from your upper cervical spine. You may have a misalignment of your topmost cervical vertebra, known as the atlas. The pain and stiffness created by this misalignment can easily radiate to the neck and jaw.

National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA) Adjustments for TMJ

When your dentist can't give you a solution for your TMJ, it's time to turn to chiropractic treatment from our National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA) chiropractor. This specialized form of chiropractic care focuses on correcting alignment errors in the first two spinal vertebrae. When properly applied by an experienced practitioner, adjustments to these vertebrae can ease even longstanding TMJ pain.

Research has verified the effectiveness of NUCCA chiropractic adjustments at combating TMJ symptoms at their source. In one eight-week study, patients who have suffered from TMJ for many years reported their perceived pain going from an average of 5.9 (on a one to-10 scale) down to a range of 0.9 to 2.0.
